How to Create a burned film effect in Sony Vegas

  1. We will be starting this tutorial with Sony Vegas already launched and open with a new video project. [ Screen Cap ]
  2. Once you are ready, proceed to Files / Import / Media as shown in the screen cap. [ Screen Cap ]
  3. In the Import window, navigate through your harddrive to the location where you saved the "AMV Effect.avi" file and open it. Doing this will add the "AMV Effect.avi" file to your videos "Project Media" tab. At this time it also might be a good idea to add in an additional videos or images that you might want to use in this short project. [ Screen Cap ]
  4. In your "Project Media" tab you should see all the files you have selceted for use in this project. The "AMV Effect.avi" file should be included among them. As you can see from the screen cap, I added in a additional image so that you may see how this effect works. [ Screen Cap ]
  5. Now Select "AMV Effect.avi" and drag it onto your video timeline. It should create a video track which will be labled "1". Once you have added in "AMV Effect.avi" to your video timeline, you may proceed to add in any additional video tracks underneath it as shown in the screen cap. [ Screen Cap ]
  6. In track 1, click on the Event FX button on the "AMV Effect.avi" file in the video timeline. See screen cap for example of where to find "Event FX" button. [ Screen Cap ]
  7. In the "Plug-in chooser" window select "Sony Chroma Keyer" and click the "add" button then click "ok". [ Screen Cap ]
  8. At the "Sony Chroma Keyer" options, select the eyedropper tool and click anyway in the darkened area in the video preview screen as shown in the screen cap. You could choose to bypass the eyedropper tool altogether and change the RGB settings to R15 G15 B15. [ Screen Cap ]
  9. If you followed my instructions correctly, the black color from the video clip should have been removed allowing you to see the video or image track underneath it as shown in the screen cap. [ Screen Cap ]
  10. Close the "Video Event FX" window and proceed to click the "Event Pan/Crop" button on the "AMV Effect.avi" file in the video timeline. Again, an example of where this button may be found can be seen in the screen cap. [ Screen Cap ]
  11. In the "Event Pan/Crop" window, check to make sure that "Size About Center" is checked. [ Screen Cap ]
  12. In the window with the "F" on it, grab the upper middle tab and drag it down till the video overlaps the layer below it correctly. You can watch the "Preview Video" window to see if you need to make the video height bigger or smaller to match up with the layer behind it. [ Screen Cap ]
  13. After you have adjusted your videos screen size, close the "Event Pan/Crop" window and proceed to click the "Compositing Mode" button on track 1. Just as a note, we are changing "Compositing Mode" on the track which "AMV Effect.avi" was placed on. [ Screen Cap ]
  14. In the drop down menu select "Cut". [ Screen Cap ]
  15. Ta-Da! If done correctly you would have just successfully created the effect we were trying to make as seen in the screen cap. [ Screen Cap ]
  16. Basically what we did was create a hole in the video track to which things can been seen through. Then we made it so that everything that was not that hole we just made was removed and cut out from the video. As you can see, the white around the edges were removed and the only thing that remained was the area we cut out with the "Sony Chroma Keyer" effect. As a note, this effect works only if the track with "AMV Effect.avi" is being played above another one as seen in the screen cap. [ Screen Cap ]
  17. Additionally, you can choose to switch the "Compositing Mode" from "Cut" to "Difference" making the color white in the "AMV Effect.avi" video make everything turn negitive that it touches. [ Screen Cap ]

The Finished Effect

Below you can download an example of what the finsihed effect should look like.
