I can guess 2 things from what you are saying:
1- either the original video file that contained those clips was moved to another folder and so Vegas can't find it.
or
2- Vegas is bugging on you cause you are using buggy codecs to edit with (XviD/DivX, WMV, MPG, etc) ---->
number 2 is most likelly the reason, and it has happened to me that the clips bug and show black parts (happened at least 20+ times when I was making "Souls of the Night", all the clips were XviD and DivX .avi), when that happens I have to convert the part I want into a huffy or lagarith to use it again.
Hope that helps and its a usefull lesson for the future (I don't use XviD/DivX to edit anymore)
EDIT: oh and this applies to ALL editing programs, not just Vegas, so your green screen problem must be the way it bugs in WMM
