Storm, lowering your standards just to watch an anime isn't something to be happy about. Call me a wuss or a coward, but if I don't like content on something, I don't just take it in and let myself be degraded like that. I will avoid it like the plague because deep in my heart I do know that my character and standards will be affected in a bad way. It is sometimes difficult to make the decision to draw the line at a certain point, but it has to be done. Innocence is a treasure, so try to hold onto it, and don't let something which is silly in the long run, like an Anime, take it from you.

(Edit: Looks like xmagic outposted me while I typed this... I'm too lazy to edit now.)

I think I should put my two cents in, even if I'm always having trouble expressing my thoughts in a way that almost everyone can understand...

I pretty much agree with ChaosEdge. Pornography, violence or gore doesn't make you evil, not even if you watch it for long periods and repeatedly . There is a boundary between reality and fiction/entertaiment, a very visible one. If someone fails to see it, then there is something wrong in the person.

Let's see... I'll take that head bursting. Getting used to that isn't really bad thing even though it might not be something to be proud about, and even the strongest etching will fade as time goes. It really depends on the person does it affect him/her or not: There are those who get eternally scarred just by having a quick look, others may not be affected in any way. Of course, there are always those who are between those two, and might get somewhat affected.

Nothing is perfect, nothing is pure. No good without evil, and the opposite. If there was only good, everything was perfect, how could we tell anymore what is good? Same goes for evil. The longer you live without realising the existence of "bad" things, the worse the impact later is and the longer it takes to get used to reality. As corny as it may sound, I think that's how it is.

....My longest post ever. However, I think got too sidetracked again...

Well, Silphy, while there is a difference between fiction and reality, violence is violence and we still become desensitized to it even if we see it animated. If you are going to say that just because something is animated it isn't as bad as if it where real, then what about hentai?

If someone watches porn you call them a pervert, and if another person watches hentai anime, you would call them a pervert as well. That doesn't change from reality to animation, so how does extreme gore and violence make this change from reality to animation as becoming more acceptable?

Also, you are right about something. Without evil, there would be no good, and vice versa. That will never change. However, just because bad things exist, we do not need to expose ourselves to them.

Good point there, Grandbahamut. Let me think...

There's a difference between animation and reality. In violent animation, no one actually gets hurt, no one really dies: It's only an animation, after all, a series of pictures drawn by someone. Same for hentai, while watching it you're actually watching nothing but a drawing (Probably a poor one).
However, violence in reality is totally different. Other living beings are hurt, probably killed in the process or left behind with eternal scars and suffering.
And I really pity those people who are desperate enough to look at porn, even more those powerhungry humans who have actually been willing to create pornography (How many of them even are willing?).

Well, Silphy, you have a point there, but think about this. If anime characters create a strong enough emotional reaction in people so that they actually like them as they would another person, then when you see the animated violence and pornography, you are still affected by it. It accesses the same part of your mind whether or not it is animated. You become less sensitive to those sorts of things in real life if you watch that kind of anime.

Oh yes, becoming attached to the character(s)... Why didn't I thought about it?

I believe that even thought the person would be affected by violence and pornography, the intensity and amount of the affection wouldn't be as big as it would've been if it had happened in reality. There's part in the mind which, even after becoming attached to a certain character, still recognizes that the animation is just an animation, nothing but fiction and that the character doesn't even exist. Sometimes that part just doesn't make iself(?) visible, and stays passive: It really depends on the person. Sooner or later, the part becomes active again and possibly snaps the person back to reality, if needed.

Silphy, it isn't about getting attached to the characters. No matter how unrealistic the image is, as long as your brain perceives the characters in a gory or hentai anime as people, you are affected on some level. There is be a part in your brain that knows it is only an animation, but there are other parts that cannot tell the difference.

I really shouldn't reply to topics when I'm too tired to think... I should be sleeping by now (The clock is 10.25 PM over here at Finland)...

I can't come up with an answer to that one, no matter how hard I think. I'll give up for now, but maybe tomorrow I've came up with something..

I think this topic is sortof going the wrong way, I suggest locking since storm's problem already is solved.

Oh yeah one more thing the chance that movies, anime, manga, gore, games etc. affect you in a "bad" way(excluding phobia's) is as high as you getting a phobia for peanutbutter sandwiches or long words( AKA Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia).
Proven by various people it's actually sugar that causes bad behaviour altough it then has to be eaten in a bit larger amounts then you get in a normal day.

Ahhhhhhh well forget it guys...let's not turn this into a debate XD...

I honestly think this is something that is a matter of opinion so well if you keep aruging over it it's gonna go nowhere...so let's leave it at that.

I think theres something we all can agree on...violence isn't cool XD.
